The name “Line to Lions” comes from the Lion's Gate bridge in Vancouver. “Line to Lions” had its premiere at the 2000 Sonic Boom Festival in Vancouver. Subsequently it was rehearsed and read by the Arditti String Quartet at the Strings Across the Sky Festival in July 2001 in Ottawa, Canada. This string quartet is essentially a study on large-scale harmonic progressions. The first of four main sections plays out a predetermined progression that is followed by a livelier impromptu section. Following this there is a quicker playing out of the progression in retrograde which leads to a fast sixteenth note ending.
